Chilean Premium Walnut

Walnuts have been a beloved snack for thousands of years. In ancient Rome, people called them by their Latin name, Juglansregia, which means “Jupiter’s royal acorn.”

Walnuts originated in Persia and spread through Asia and Europe. Spanish missionaries brought them to California in the 1700s. Today, most of the walnuts in the U.S. are grown in California, but some are grown in the Midwest as well.

English walnuts, also known as Persian walnuts, are members of the Juglandaceae family, with pecans and hickory as close relatives. They grow in a tan shell about the size of a golf ball with a seam around the center. Split the shell at the seam, and inside you’ll find the bumpy, golden brown nut.

Walnut skin sometimes has a slightly bitter flavor, but the nut itself is mild, earthy, and a little tangy.

The eastern black walnut tree (Juglans nigra) is native to eastern North America, while the English walnut (Juglans regia) is native to Southeastern Europe and Central Asia. While both come from the same plant genus, the English is milder in flavor with an easier to crack shell. The black has an strong, earthier taste.

In 2017, world production of walnuts (in shell) was 3.8 million tonnes, with China contributing 51% of the total (table). Other major producers (in the order of decreasing harvest) were the United States, Iran, and Turkey.

Chile is the largest walnut exporting country in the Southern Hemisphere, and the third largest walnut exporting country in the world. Ten years ago, Chandler walnuts were brought into Chile from California. Now, this variant accounts for more than 70% of walnuts produced in Chile.

For walnuts of the same size, Chilean ones have 2% to 3% more kernels than ones from California. That Chilean walnuts are shelled by hand is also an advantage.”
